Waste classification, environmental management during demolition, onsite soil and groundwater investigation, PCB contaminaton investigation, Mitchell ACT
A fire destroyed the oil treatment facility, which at the time contained 500,000 litres of PCB containing oil, and 22 drums of metallic sodium. Adam was the Project Manager (for a former employee) that led the team to assess wastes and materials that required demolition, segregation and removal from the site. Adam led the preparation of the Environmental Management Plan (EMP) as the central document to the works for demolition, which was endorsed by the appointed Site Auditor and the ACT Environment Protection. The demolition work was conducted under strict OHS protocol to mitigate the explosion risk presented by metallic sodium (contacting water) and the dispersion of soot materials containing dioxin compounds formed by the combustion of PCB oils.
The site was divested and the new owner retained Sullivan Environmental Sciences to conduct a detailed investigation of onsite soil and groundwater. The work is currently the subject of an audit by a NSW EPA accredited Contaminated Land Site Auditor. The site is in the process of being remediated to clean up contaminated soils.
